The School District of South Milwaukee welcomes parents and community members who would like to volunteer in our schools. All volunteers need to complete a background check to continue volunteering in District buildings. Please check with the main office to learn more about the necessary steps to complete a background check. Thank you for your commitment to our students and to their safety!

To become an SDSM volunteer you must be:

  1. Approved by your student's school.
  2. Once you have been approved, please complete a background check. The background check takes approximately 1 week to process.
  3. You will be notified by mail or email of your background check results.

Thank you for your interest in volunteering!

Senior Tax Exchange Program (STEP)

STEP photo

The Senior Tax Exchange Program (S.T.E.P) provides seniors in the South Milwaukee community who are social security eligible the opportunity to share their gifts and talents with the school district’s staff and students.

In exchange for their work in our schools, seniors who participate in the program will be eligible for a
$6.50 per hour tax credit on their property tax bill, to a maximum of $500. Tax credits can be accrued between January - October for the same year’s property tax bill. Hours worked in November and December will go to the following year’s property tax bill. Seniors who reach their maximum tax credit may continue to volunteer in the school district if they would like to.

Participants in S.T.E.P are assigned to a school based on need and work alongside school
employees, and ultimately report to the principal / other relevant administrator.

Examples of jobs that can be done through S.T.E.P include:

  • Reading with students
  • Playing math / other games with students
  •  Helping in the library
  • Clerical work

Please note the following terms/conditions of volunteering through S.T.E.P:

  • In order to be eligible to volunteer through S.T.E.P you will have to complete a background check. You will receive an email prompting you to do so after the district reviews your application, or you can fill one out in person at the district office. The district office is located at 901 15th Ave., South Milwaukee, Wi 53172.
  • Tax credits are not transferable to other properties or individuals.
  • Tax credits may not be redeemed in a cash payment or through any other method.
